Generator Preventive Maintenance

You don’t want to find out the hard way that your generator is faulty. The cost of proactive maintenance is much lower than the expense of emergency service, replacement parts, and interrupted business; regular preventive maintenance visits for your generator protect your business from these costly repairs and downtime. They also extend the life of your system.

When ConServ technicians inspect and maintain your equipment, it increases its reliability and allows our professionals to correct any potential issues before an emergency can arise. This means your backup power system will be functional, when you need it to be.

What Could You Expect from Typical Maintenance?

General Inspection: Regular exercise keeps engine parts lubricated, prevents oxidation of electrical contacts, uses up fuel before it deteriorates, and helps provide reliable engine start up. We will exercise the generator set at least once a month for a minimum of 30 minutes, on load, if possible and accurately record all observations, performance and operational parameters, as well as any corrections made.

Lubrication Service: The engine oil level must be checked when the engine is shut down. We will follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for API oil classification and oil viscosity, keep the oil level to the “full” mark as near as possible, and filter at the intervals recommended.

Cooling System Service: Coolant level must also be checked when the engine is shut down and we add coolant, if necessary. Heavy duty diesel engines require a balanced mixture of water, antifreeze, and coolant additives. We inspect the exterior of the radiator for obstructions and remove all dirt or foreign material. Then check the operation of the coolant heater by verifying that hot coolant is being discharged from the outlet hose.

Fuel System Service: With the generator set operating, our technicians inspect the fuel supply lines, return lines, filters and fittings for cracks or abrasions and ensure that the lines are not rubbing against anything. We repair leaks and alter line routing to eliminate wear and drain diesel fuel filters, at the interval indicated by the manufacturer. Any accumulated water vapor in the fuel tank must also be periodically drained, along with any sediment.

Air Intake Service: We check the turbocharger and associated components, and also clean or replace air cleaner filter elements based on the conditions in which the generator set operates. The charge-air piping and hoses are also inspected for leaks, holes, cracks or loose connections. We tighten the hose clamps and inspect the charge-air cooler for dirt and debris that may block the fins. We check for cracks, holes or other damage. The engine air intake components are checked at the required interval.

Servicing and Testing Starting Batteries: We check the terminals on the starting batteries for clean and tight connections.

Regular Generator Engine Exercise: Our technicians monitor fluid levels, oil pressure and coolant temperatures. We look for changes in engine performance, sound, or appearance that will indicate that service or repair is needed, such as misfires, vibration, excessive exhaust smoke, power loss, or increases in oil or fuel consumption.
